Personal Records

So Tuesday (I think) we had our Monett meet for XC and I PRed with a 5k time of 20:24. Today we had our MSSU Stampede meet and I PRed once again with a 5k time of 19:19, shedding more than one minute off my time! Now there are some very obvious factors to why I did better, such as it was less hilly and the weather was good for running.

Speaking of good weather, there's a nice thunderstorm going on right now, despite the news saying there's 40% chance of rain. It feels good, but it's a little chilly to be honest. It's weird how just last week it was hot as hell and now I'm freezing my ass off. I remember the good ol' days where I had a few layers of flab to insulate me and I could stand cold weather better, but now it just sucks because with XC I've gotten rid of all that. This winter will be fun (/sarcasm), but the cold will be good for my boxing training. Winter is definately on it's way.

I've been thinking about my boxing training lately and not sure what to do. Last year I never ran, which was dumb, but I hated running. Actually, the reason I joined XC was make myself like running, because with me wanting to join the Marines and do boxing I'd need to learn to love it. When I started running in the summer I weighed 160lbs. and in two to three weeks I got down to 140lbs. and I've been a steady 140-143lbs. since then.

Anyway, about my boxing training; XC ends mid-November if we go to State, so I'll probably get a head start instead of waiting for new years like I did last year. Also, unlike last year, I need to up the intensity a bit. I'm starting to think that what I did last year could hardly be called boxing compared to what I want to do. Let's see, last year my training was hitting the punching bag for 8-10 rounds and lifting weights. Even though I got in better shape I'm in way better shape now than I've ever been, so I think I need to keep it up throughout the winter. I'd get up and run Frisco trail in the morning before school, come home and eat a nice protein breakfast. Then I'd lift in the school's gym after school and come home and do 12 rounds on the punching bag and start doing some speedbag work. I'd only lift Mon. Wed. and Fri. so on Tues. Thurs. and Sat. I'd run more instead of lift weights. Sunday = day off.

I need to find out more about the Silver Gloves competition I keep hearing about that takes place in Joplin sometime this winter. I've had people mention it to me when I tell them about me training for boxing, but I know nothing else about it.

In other news Sylvester Stallone's new movie, John Rambo was given a release date by Lionsgate. It's supposedly coming out January 25th, 2008. That's sooner than the rumored/expected May 2008 release, but that can be good and bad. First off, it's good because we get to see Rambo sooner. However, January is known as the month that shitty movies come out...so people will either think, "Oh, January...must be crap" or "Yay, less competition". Another bad thing is that even though we have two awesome trailers for it, they're unofficial and R-rated, and there's no poster art or anything advertising this movie besides the internet buzz. But hey, maybe all Stallone needs is the internet to advertise his movie, it worked well for Rocky Balboa.

Here's another thing I'm worried about. Rocky Balboa made over $100 million, which is good, but it had a Christmas release (which is the 2nd best release time for movies beside summertime), and it was rated PG, so it was available to a broader audience. John Rambo is rated R and you can see why from the trailers. Let's just say it is to action movies what Saw's violence was to horror movies. You have guys getting their guts and throats ripped out, and getting blown apart with .50 caliber machine guns. So it's obviously not the family film Rocky Balboa was. Maybe Rambo has a larger fan-base or something...but here's to hoping it's as successful as Rocky Balboa.

Well that's pretty much it I think. Now I'm going to have a nice large meal of nothing and watch some Chris Farley in Black Sheep.

Have a good day
